 Wakefield Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb at Wakefield Cathedral Precinct   26/27 FEB

Wakefield's Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb returns to the city centre precinct.

The event, which is the first annual food festival in the UK's "foodie" calendar, was recently nominated for a tourism oscar at Welcome to Yorkshire's White Rose Awards under Tourism Event of the Year 2009.

Join local and regional chefs, food producers and attractions as they celebrate the best of Yorkshire food and drink. Enjoy produce from the very best of Yorkshire with a local food market alongside a specialist market and top regional food champions who will be demonstrating dishes in the main marquee.

JULY 1-4, Leeds Loves Food
Celebrates the range and quality of the food and drink available in the city’s restaurants, including events and promotions. A launch event in Millennium Square will host live action from the Leeds Loves Food kitchen.


 

AUG 3, The Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show, Yorkshire (01947 810 332)
First established in 1800, this is one of the few remaining gooseberry shows. Growers from all over the country compete for the honour of growing the heaviest gooseberry over four categories. Open to the public from 2pm


SEPT 17-26, York Festival of Food and Drink
Highlights include a Yorkshire produce market, with foodie treats ranging from rare-breed meats to local clotted cream as well as beer and whisky festivals. Celebrity chefs will give cookery demonstrations and there will be a young chefs’ competition.                                          


     FARM SHOPS

Burton Agnes Hall in East Yorkshire has a Farmers' Food Store which is packed with seasonal Yorkshire produce including the Hall's own game and fruit and vegetables from the garden

Castle Howard Farm Shop is award-winning and well worth a visit.

Coppice House Farm Shop near Sheffield is a small, family run farm on the edge of the region.

The Balloon Tree near York aims to produce and sell as much top quality food as possible.

The Farmer's Cart lays in idyllic countryside setting close to historic York. The shop prides itself on the quality, freshness and variety of produce.

Newby Hall Farm shop - recently voted in the top 50 farm shops by The Telegraph. Ninety per cent of the food sold in this farm shop is sourced from within 40 miles, including traditionally reared meat and game from the estate's own farms, artisan bread, locally grown vegetables and other Yorkshire goodies.

Ainsty Farm Shop, York - recently voted in the top 50 farm shops by The Telegraph. All beef, pork and lamb are sourced from within a seven-mile radius from traditional farms. New season asparagus is grown two miles away and there's local carrots, parsnips and cabbage. Regional specialities include Wensleydale cheese and home-made Yorkshire curd tarts.

Beadlam Grange Farm Shop, nr Helmsley - Recent winners of the Best farm business at the 2009 Rural Awards, offers ccustomers a unique Farm Shopping Experience in lovely surroundings. Customers can purchase fresh farm produce from the farmshop and then enjoy tea, coffee and farmhouse baking in the traditional Granary Tearoom.

Blacker Hall Farm Shop, Wakefield. Offering a vast range of fresh meat direct from their own farm, freshly baked bread and baking, the family run farm shop has quickly become renowned for its exceptional quality fresh produce.

Farmer Copleys Farm Shop Featherstone
Offers a vast range of meats and pastries and breads together with fresh vegatables.area for young kids to play and a few animals about.
